I'm getting into car shows, as they are pretty popular in this area. I own a Ranger now, but its not worth the money getting it to show material. What would be a good truck or suv to invest in that is pretty cheap, and can be modified or fitted to be show quality? I know that any vehicle CAN be……but I wanna know some of the better models and years. Keep me informed guys.
Thanks guys. All good ideas. Anyone know the s10 clone….late 90s. I don't think tis Suzuki, but something with an S I'm sure. I like the s10s, my friend has an Xtreme. He showed it today. By the way, the show is mostly classics, no imports unfortunetly.

A man named Gottlieb Daimler built the first ever-motorized truck back in 1896. He was a German automotive pioneer who also invented the very first motorcycle, as well as the world’s first taxi. Daimler’s truck consisted of a four horsepower engine, a belt drive, one reverse speed and two speeds for going forward.

In early times, the intended use and purpose of a truck was for industrial reasons. They were used to haul things, and as new needs developed, so did new types of trucks. In early times of war, trucks were used to move ammunition and troops from one place to another, as well as to transport the injured and causalities among the soldiers.

Trucks were also invented that could be used for commercial purposes such as logging, farming, and later to mix and pour materials such as concrete. Later on, huge trucks were invented for the sole purpose of hauling other trucks and vehicles from their place of manufacture to sales centers all over the world.

Today, trucks are used for a myriad of reasons, and many different types of people own and drive them. Farmers everywhere use trucks to haul hay and small farm equipment, to move cattle as well as supplies. Those in the landscape and lawn maintenance industries also use trucks; wherein trailers are attached to the trucks in order to get lawn equipment from job to job.

Trucks are not only used for job related tasks, boating enthusiasts also utilize them. There are not many reliable cars that are going to be able to pull a large, recreational type boat, and where would you put the skis, ice chests and other necessities if the trucks’ spacious bed were not available?

Trucks are made by a number of vehicle manufacturers. There are the regular size passenger trucks that seat only two people, and the large extended cab trucks that can seat five people comfortably. There are the plain trucks that come with just the basics, and trucks that come fully loaded with every available option.

Some people enjoy the sport of four wheeling, and so they purchase trucks that allow them to drive over rough terrain and through bogs of mud! These trucks are equipped with 4-wheel drive, while other trucks not intended for this purpose would come standard with 2-wheel drive.

When in search of a truck, you will need to examine your needs, and also determine exactly what the truck will be used for. If you have a large family, then a truck would probably not make a good primary vehicle for you. However, if you need a solid piece of transportation that can be utilized to haul things around, and that you can attach a trailer to, a truck might just be a worthwhile investment.

The world’s primary source of fuel for different industries comes from the reserves of fossil fuels which is a non-renewable source of energy. Since fossil fuel is non-renewable, the world is in danger of running out of supply. While the current amount of fossil fuel reserves can still last a long time, steps have been taken by different industries to lessen their dependency on petroleum products. The automotive industry is one of the major sectors in the global community that has taken a step towards not only in the development of alternative fuel but in implementing the use of such fuel as well. Several car manufacturers now produce vehicles that run on alternative fuel or alternative fuel mixed with gasoline.

One of the more prominent car manufacturers that attend to the need of decreasing the consumption of gasoline is Toyota. The Japanese outfit has introduced their first hybrid car in Japan and eventually also produced such in the US. This vehicle is the Toyota Prius. The car is now the most popular hybrid car in production with a buyer base that is exponentially expanding in number. Another car manufacturer committed to the environmental protection cause is the Ford Motor Company subsidiary Volvo. The car manufacturer known for producing safe cars are also taking steps forward in the development of alternative fuels which is evident in their three models in that are already in production. These units employ the FlexiFuel technology thus allowing them to run on a combination of bio-ethanol and gasoline which is called E85.

Their FlexiFuel technology being already used by some of their models already is also being sold in selected European markets. This is not the only technology being developed by the Sweden-based car manufacturer. They are also following in the steps of Toyota and Honda which have been using hybrid technology in their cars. The vehicles employing the hybrid technology runs not only on gasoline alone but is also powered at some point by electricity via an electric motor that is capable of giving enough torque and horsepower to the vehicle. This technology is what Volvo is developing not for application on their passenger cars but actually for the use of their trucks.

Volvo is the world’s second largest manufacturer of trucks behind General Motors, but they are making their bid for supremacy in that segment. In the process, they have developed a hybrid truck that they aim to sell to different industries especially those with a large fleet of trucks. In the development of their hybrid trucks, they have teamed up with the US Air Force which will be the first to use the hybrid truck technology. The US Air Force has already ordered four of the said trucks and the construction of the units is already underway. The government agency can save on their fuel consumption by as much as 35 per cent depending on driving conditions and application.

The technology behind the hybrid truck which was developed hand in hand by Volvo and the US Air Force and such is known as the I-SAM or Integrated Starter Alternator Motor. This uses the big Volvo alternator which doubles as an electric motor to help the truck’s diesel engine to drive the truck. The use of the alternator as an electric motor results to a better fuel economy over trucks which are powered only by a diesel engine. Thanks to relatively lesser fuel consumption, emissions are reduced therefore helping in preservation of the environment. The exhaust system further cleans the gas emitted by the engine a fact that makes the hybrid electric truck from Volvo not only fuel efficient cut is also clean.

The use of the alternator as an electric motor is already being employed by the Saturn Vue hybrid car. The technology is almost similar except for the vehicle being driven since the I-SAM technology is made for a much heavier vehicle. The alternator or electric motor takes over the operation of the truck during idling and when less power is needed. It can also be used to give added boost to the truck’s diesel engine.

Consumer Reports recently disclosed the results of their study that focused on predicting the reliability of new vehicles for the 2007 model year. Once again, Asian car makers fared well in terms of reliability and the European brands excelled in performance. Meanwhile, US brands has received a mixed performance on the tests and studies conducted by the leading information source for consumer products.

The three big car makers in the US fared not so well. But they did not do so badly either. Ford, for example, has a good number of vehicles which garnered good reliability ratings. This fact should help Ford finish higher in the leader board of the most reliable brands in the market. But about a quarter of their vehicles received below average ratings. The end result is that Ford remained unchanged and took position in the 16th place.

General Motors, currently the biggest automobile manufacturer, also has reliable vehicles produced. The brand received average or better ratings just like the Yukon SUV from GMC. But, just like Ford, about a third of their vehicles did not fare so well in the reliability study conducted by Consumer Reports.

Chrysler, another American car maker has the lowest average test score among the big three car manufacturers which are based in the US.

In the said study, Consumer Reports found out something that will be good for the reputation of Ford Motor Company and General Motors. Engineers who tested the different cars considered in the study found out that some recent models from the two aforementioned US car makers are serious competition to Japanese and European brands. The Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, and the Cadillac CTS are cited as some of the American models which are at par with their Japanese or European counterparts.

The most notable cause of the below average rating of American made vehicles are in terms of reliability, fuel economy, braking and handling. All of these attributes are what Asian and European car makers excel at. Reliability and fuel economy are the strongest selling points of Asian brands. The Toyota Prius hybrid electric vehicle is one of the main reasons for the popularity of Asian brands when it comes to fuel economy. European brands, on the other hand, are known for their superiority in performance.

General Motors has 42 models considered by Consumer Reports in their study. Of that number, a handful performed great during the tests conducted by CR. The Chevrolet Avalanche and the renowned Corvette performed so well that they were almost at the top of their class. But the better-than-average ratings garnered by these models are countered by lackluster performance of many GM models which did the American car manufacturer no good at all. Outdated minivans and compact pick up trucks are some of the GM models which performed poorly on the tests CR performed on them. GM vehicles that have suffered low ratings are due to the fact that their performance in braking and handling is below par. Fuel economy is also an issue that GM needs to address in order for their vehicles to improve.

As for Ford, their lineup of vehicles showed good handling capability and ride comfort. The majority of their trucks and SUVs also received praise for their adequate space and utility provided. Their problem is in braking, refinement and fuel economy. It seems that American brands have a problem with fuel economy that is why aftermarket parts are used widely to improve a vehicle’s fuel efficiency, just like the Plymouth cold air intake system.

Chrysler has a lot of work to do to improve their vehicle’s performance. Noisy engines, bad visibility and cheap interior are what they need to work on still.

Car companies have been investing in China, but Tiger Truck refuses to go with the flow. Recently, the truck manufacturer announced that they will be producing Chinese trucks in the U.S. The assembly plant will be located in Jasper, Texas.

In a ceremony to announce the construction of the assembly plant, the owners of Tiger Trucks, Texas Congressman Kevin Brady, and other state officials were present. They jointly announced that Tiger Trucks will be the manufacturing trucks that are designed by the ChangAn Automobile Group and this is China’s third largest truck manufacturer.

“With so many U.S. manufacturers investing in China, I am particularly pleased to be investing in the U.S., hiring skilled U.S. workers and delivering superior products made here for our market in the Americas,” says Mike Ward, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Tiger Trucks. “While others are trying to buy cheap parts from China, we are seeking important OEM and sourcing agreements with key U.S. suppliers. I couldn’t be more pleased with our long-standing partnership with ChangAn that leads to this historic first. In our off-road vehicle class, Tiger has been first to build an automatic transmission, 4WD, limited slip differential, electric drive, hybrid drive, and now, we will be the first to deliver true ‘Made in U.S.’ vehicles with a Chinese heritage. Our strong dealer network and fast-growing number of users seem to like what we are doing and now we can do it even better,” Ward added further.

The assembly plant to be constructed in Jasper will produce vehicles in early 2008. About 80 percent of the vehicles to be assembled at the Jasper plant will be for export. Tiger Trucks announced that they have initially planned the production of two truck platforms.

The first platform will support the Champ - a full-size pickup truck which will be available in either 2-door or 4-door configuration. The Leopard will also be built around the same platform as the Champ. The Leopard will be only for export and will be fitted with a diesel engine, dual rear-wheels and other features which will make it an efficient on-road vehicle.

The second platform is still to be named, but it is made for medium-duty truck. The vehicles to be built around the second platform will not only be built for export but will also be available in the U.S. market.

Congressman Brady expressed the sentiments of the community in his speech at the announcement ceremony: “With all the choices in North America available to Tiger Truck for the location of this important plant serving a large section of the international marketplace, we are particularly pleased that this remarkable facility was now available surrounded by an eager and skilled workforce positioned as it is to meet so many of your strategic objectives. All of Texas is celebrating this historic first with Tiger and we look forward to many good things to come.”

Just like the way a Toyota bumper protects the engine, the construction of the assembly plant will also protect the interest of skilled American auto workers.

there aren't any real good sites that have dependable trucks,,true there are a lot of sites that have trucks on them,,but don't be one of the ones that get stuck with someone else,s nightmare,,i have a friend who bought one from a site,,and when he went to get it,,he was shocked by the appearance of it,,and also the mechanical condition of it,,they had to have it towed home,,which cost them over 400 bucks,,plus the actual people they bought it from wasn't even there,,when they went to get it,,in all it turned out to be a 2 thousand dollar waste,and to this day it still set,s in a garage,,because it needs so much done to it,,that you cant drive it safely and as far as repairing it,,i own a repair shop,,and the cost to repair it,is going to cost more than it is worth,,if you want a good truck look around in a auto trader or something,,at least you can go look at it,,before you pay for it,,i hope this help,s.
